Past Imperfect 2019

Hi! Thanks for creating for me, or for otherwise taking a look at my letter. I’m @fencesit.ao3 on AO3! I'm requesting all fic for this exchange.

You may notice that I have less details or prompts for some fandoms/ships/mediums than others. Please don't take this as an indication that I want those things any less than other things! I very much desperately want everything I've requested. And: please don't feel like you need to follow one of my prompts to keep from disappointing me. I've provided all the information below in an attempt to help my writer feel confident in producing a gift for me, but if prompts and extra details don't work for you then feel free to ignore them.

I'm up for recursive fic of my own fic or recursive of gifts I've received in the past (assuming you have the author's permission). I couldn't think of any art stuff I particularly wanted this time around, but I'd be open to art treats if you want! I should have art likes below somewhere.

Navigation:

DNW:

  • unrequested AUs (canon divergence is okay)
  • suicide/suicidal ideation
  • vehicle accidents
  • dissociation, which includes:
    • derealization — An alteration in the perception or experience of the external world so that it seems unreal.
    • depersonalization — The persistent feeling of observing oneself from outside one’s body or having a sense that one’s surroundings/body aren't real.
    • If you're writing a character who's literally having an out of body experience (like, because they're a ghost and something else has taken over their body) or dealing with a, actual fake world (like, because they're trapped in a magical illusion) then that's okay as long as the situation is clear to the reader, even if the character doesn't know.
  • sex scenes with underage (under 18) characters
    • I don't mind underage characters having consensual sex with each other off-screen, I just don't want M or E rated descriptions of those events.
  • Permanent non-canonical character death
    • anyone can die as many times as you want if it's going to be fixed via time travel or other means.
  • characters meeting past/future/alternate universe versions of themselves
    • it's alright for their past/future/AU self to definitely exist, be discussed, or even be observed by their other self, I just DNW actual interaction/conversation.
  • cannibalism or vore
  • necrophilia
  • incest
  • PWP
  • sounding
  • rimming
  • bodily waste
  • detailed or graphic descriptions/depictions of wounds, medical procedures, torture, etc.
  • the rotting undead/zombies
    • magically preserved non-rotting undead like vampires or skeletons are fine
    • Special SVSSS note: TLJ vaguely falls under this umbrella I guess? Please gently skip over too many details about that whole situation if he appears in your fic.
  • Fandom-specific DNWs (also listed with individual fandom info below)
    • Scum Villain — Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu (or Original LBH/original SQQ, or any combo thereof) shipfic; "Gamerfic" and related tropes (Additional stats, interface options, game-like options, or System based reality warping beyond what occurs in canon)
    • Naruto — Boruto content
    • ATLA — fic that primarily focuses on Azula

Fic likes:

  • Canon divergence
  • time travel (especially peggy sue/with a fix-it focus)
  • timeloops
  • dimension travel (eg from the canon timeline to a divergent timeline)
  • slice of life
  • loyalty
  • worldbuilding & very specific descriptions
  • casefic/missionfic
  • codas and other canon compliant stuff
  • fake/fantasy politics
  • character backstory
  • noodle incidents
  • friendship
  • characters who have to work hard to function in the same space and also characters who don't like each other — see my Hate Exchange letter!
  • cynical/pessimistic/distrustful characters being proven wrong by things turning out better than they could have hoped for — for example: "I could never be loved!" -> Is absolutely loved, "We could never have peace." -> Peace is had
  • happy and bittersweet endings
  • angst
  • hurt/comfort
  • 5+1
  • drabble series
  • handcuffed together
  • huddling for warmth
  • the enemy of my enemy is my friend
  • signs of familiarity/intimacy or long histories

Ship likes:

  • Anything on my general likes list is excellent in shipfic too of course. Also, I am a pretty big fan of understated shipfic — if you just put the characters together and show that they care about each other I don't even need kissing or anything, really, which I think can work well for fandoms where characters are frequently in life-or-death situations or need to be professional.
  • Slow burn, friends to lovers, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers — The slower the better. FWB-to-lovers is also great.
  • Characters who have history with each other — established relationships are good, but what I really love is feeling like the characters know each other well and think about each other often. In characters who are already friends, that probably looks like, say, knowing what kind of coffee the other person likes. In characters who were enemies, they probably know each other’s weaknesses and faults really well.
  • Arguments where each person thinks the conversation is about something subtly different — I mean, misunderstandings in general are great for tension, but I like it when characters are trying to communicate but they’re coming from perspectives so different that they can’t even argue without clarification.
  • Casual physical affection — a lot of my ships involve people who have massive or very specific personal bubbles, so seeing the way the characters touch each other when they’re not already in Kissing Mode is really great.
  • Pining, especially longstanding they-could-never-want-me pining — the id wants what the id wants and what the id wants is characters with low self-worth. Bonus points if it's tied up in some kind of misunderstanding about their relationship (eg, "They hate me!") or their differing rank/species/wealth/etc.
  • When their hands touch and other very understated moments of romantic or sexual tensionaaaaaaa I don't even have words for how much I love this, if you include it I will wail happily at you about it in my comment, possibly at length.

Smut likes

I don't usually request smut but if you want to include it then I don't mind. I know that that's kind of an extremely bland and unenthusiastic way to start out but it's, uh, really honest, at least? I'm usually after character interaction, plot, or worldbuilding with my requests, but getting a sex scene along with other stuff definitely wouldn't ruin a gift. Overall, I want you to feel free to write sex if you would enjoy doing so/if you think the fic will be better with it! I'm generally just enthused by my writer getting to have fun writing something they're proud of, you know?

There are obviously some things I do like, and I know some folks really enjoy tailoring their fic (i'm one of them!) so:

  • Extremely emotionally charged sex — No matter what kind of sex acts they do, I really love when the sex has a lot of feelings involved, especially if it's sad emotions or desperation or part of some hurt/comfort or whump.
  • Sex that's very directly relevant to the plot or character arcs — I love sex scenes where I learn more about a character or relationship. Is 'character driven smut' a thing? Because if so, that's my favorite.
  • anal and pegging, PIV, frottage, intercural, handjobs, all kinds of fingering
  • overstimulation and edging, orgasm delay/denial
  • bondage — handcuffs, spreader bars, honor bondage, and honestly pretty much anything in the general category of restricting someone's movement during sex
  • praise kink, loyalty kink, hurt/comfort, trust and sex otherwise overloaded with emotion
  • magic/super powers being used in fun and inventive ways
  • clothing/uniform kink, half-clothed, one naked and the other not.
  • hair petting, cuddling, lazy mornings in bed, touch starvation
  • size difference, size kink, come inflation
  • pregnancy, including mpreg — impregnation porn and pregnant sex welcome. And while we're talking about it, narratively speaking I love a fic where being pregnant/mpregnant is upsetting because the character didn't plan for it, thinks their partner doesn't want it, conceived in a nonconsensual or dubiously consensual way, can't afford it, etc, all of which could be comforted away with or without sex.
  • for noncon: humiliation, bruises/rough sex, manipulation, forced feminization
  • probably other things that I'm forgetting! I'm pretty open to a bunch of things that aren't on the above list or mentioned in my DNWs, and if you're unsure if you should include something please feel free to ask through the mods.

Requested medium: fanfiction

Requested character(s):

  • Shen Yuan | Shen Qingqiu
  • Original Shen Qingqiu
  • Shang Qinghua

Fandom-specific DNWs:

  • Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu (or Original LBH/Original SQQ, or any combo thereof) shipfic — including LBH's canonical crush/OLBH's canonical obsession is definitely fine
  • "Gamerfic" and related tropes (Additional stats, interface options, game-like options, or System based reality warping beyond what occurs in canon) — it's ok for SY and SQH to consider what they're doing to be "save scumming" or for the System to use terms like "save points"! I just don't want their reality to be any more video game-y than it already is.

freeform

  • Character Has Control of Mental Time Travel and Uses It to Save Scum

Shen Yuan

  • Shipwise I really like LQG/SQQ if you want to write shipfic, but gen fic or fic where lots of people are into SQQ but he's oblivious or whatever would also be very, very excellent — I just want to see him play around with time travel!
  • Covering any point(s) in canon is cool with me, and I'm down for the control of time travel to be either in addition to or instead of the System. I also definitely don't need any complicated justification for the time travel to be a thing! This being SVSSS I'm perfectly content with even very flimsy "A Wizard Did It" explanation, because that'd be pretty in line with Airplane-bro's worldbuilding lmao.
  • Seeing SQQ trying to derail the canon plot in earnest would be great, and I'd definitely be interested in him being able to go farther and farther back with his save scumming, to the point of overwriting the original Shen Qingqiu earlier and earlier, if you're up for that kind of moral conundrum.
  • I'd also love to see SQQ try again and again to get things right with LBH/avoid the Immortal Alliance Conference/get out of the mess in Jinlan City!

Original Shen Qingqiu

  • Shipwise I honestly really love gen for orig SQQ but seeing things with LQG develop (platonically or romantically) despite their extremely terrible canonical relationship would be really interesting and I do love me anything involving YQY and Shen Jiu. Also, I like happy endings but I also....am really into YQY/SQQ being a tragically doomed romance....like just FYI.
  • If it's a power Shen Qingqiu has from a young age, I'd love to see how he grows and develops it, and how much YQY knows, and if there are any draw backs, and how it affects his understanding of the world and the people around him.
  • If it's a power SQQ gets suddenly, possibly even instead of being replaced by Shen Yuan, that'd also be really interesting! Is the day he got the power the earliest day he can go back to? Does he tell anyone? How bad do things get with Binghe before SQQ discovers/uses the power?

Shang Qinghua

  • Shipwise it's MBH/SQH or bust, honestly, but for gen relationships I think seeing SQH interact more with SQQ, LQG, or LBH would be wonderful!
  • Like with SQQ I don't really care how SQH gets the time travel powers — whatever explanation works for you works for me!
  • I really love weird SVSSS worldbuilding and I would love to see SQH use the save scumming to explore this fully realized version of his trashy novel and especially to investigate the more dangerous but potentially useful bits, like knowing that a problem can be solved by one of several plants but not being able to remember which one/know which scrapped draft that solution might be pulled from.
  • If you're going to write moshang I love them misunderstanding each other and Shang Qinghua thinking MBJ might kill him for a long, LONG time after MBJ stops considering it. I'd also really love to see SQH having to legit struggle to figure out how to get on MBJ's good side...and end up going totally over-the-top...and guilty living with the knowledge that he's totally cheating his way into everything by getting to try again over and over.
  • Shang Qinghua can't control time but he does keep his memories every time Shen Qingqiu save scums.

  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster

Group: Hatake Kakashi/Hoshigaki Kisame

Somehow I've never requested this ridiculous rarepair in a letter before — I think I've just been begging for it in flash exchanges, lmao — but at last here it is! What I like about this ship is that Kakashi and Kisame have obvious points of tension, but none of it feels particularly insurmountable or personal. I mean, ok, that whole "capturing Naruto" thing is a sticking point, but Kisame never manages it and no one dies (mostly) so them working through it feels interesting rather than impossible. I also think that both of them are people who value loyalty very highly and are, in their own ways, disillusioned with the village system...but obviously have chosen very different paths.

I also really like things about them that take place before things come to a head with Naruto or that take place in an AU where Kisame didn't join Akatsuki or whatever. Or missing nin Kakashi! That's always fun.

  • Time Loop - Character and Enemy Are the Only People Aware of Looping — I just love the idea of Kakashi and Kisame coming to work together because they're forced into it by a timeloop. Maybe getting out of it involves Kakashi doing some seal work while Kisame fights something?
  • Falling in love with a past version of an enemy — What I love about this one particularly is the tension of one of them knowing that they used to be enemies. I think Kisame would maybe be compelled to be honest about it eventually, too.
  • Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self — I love the tension of a character having to step back into their past and try to go through the motions and hide the time travel while still completing whatever their goals are. Or, if they travelled accidentally, the absolute slog of having to redo everything they'd already accomplished. Also: the inevitable re-thinking of absolutely everything, which I think is a great way to push people into new interactions and stuff!
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — I think it'd probably be Kakashi going back to save a loved one, and with the Mist connection I guess it'd make the most sense for it to be Rin...but I'm really up for everything! Including something that incorporates "Altering Non-Canonical Disaster".
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — Like, honestly, where to start, right? I'd particularly love to see something around preventing the Uchiha Massacre, but you really can't disappoint with Naruto fix-its!
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — I have a deep love for the Naruto time travel standard "everyone but me died so I came back in time to make sure things go differently this time" trope. Having it be Kakashi who time travels would be great, of course, but I also don't think I've ever seen it be Kisame who time travels! Maybe he defected (for Reasons) and ended up on the same side as Kakashi. Or maybe Kisame is caught up in the time travel on accident...like it's an edo tensei apocalypse and edo tensei Kisame is standing closest when the technique goes off?

Group: Senju Tobirama/Uchiha Madara

I love both of these characters and I'd be thrilled with basically anything for them! I definitely like things set before the village comes together, in AUs where Izuna lived to see the village come together, or in relatively canon-compliant situations where Tobirama killed Izuna.

Particularly with this time travel I would love to see the tension of Tobirama killing Izuna explored in a way that can both resolve and fix it (...only to introduce new tension re:how much Izuna hates the Senju...) although I don't have my heart set on that by any means.

  • Time Loop - Character and Enemy Are the Only People Aware of Looping — Some kind of seal trap they both blunder into pre-village? A post-village attempt on Tobirama's part to go back in time and not kill Izuna but whoops he botches it so that he and Izuna both have to live?
  • Falling in love with a past version of an enemy — One of them goes back in time and, oh no, he's hot....and young and idealistic....
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — Both of them have multiple brothers to save, obviously! Also, presumably, mothers?
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — Like obviously the canon/backstory I'd love to see changed is "Madara and Tobirama get together, plus Madara doesn't bounce from the village", but let's stray away from just "don't let Izuna die", like...maybe one of them goes back to stop the village from coming together and manages it but also whoops falls in love. Or, Tobirama goes back in time and decides not to tell Butsuma about Hashirama and Madara meeting.
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — Hashirama dies fighting Madara and Tobirama goes back to change it? Hashirama dies fighting Madara and *Madara* goes back to change it? Izuna kills Tobirama instead of the other way around, and Madara tries to fix that?

  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster
  • Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s)

Gaara (Naruto)

I really couldn't resist requesting Gaara — I have a constant and intense need for more Suna-focused fic, especially time travel fic, and I think a lot of the things I love about Gaara (like, his character arc where he eventually becomes loved and trusted by his village!) only get more interesting when you shove time travel in there.

I really like gen for Gaara (especially those sibling feels!) but if you want to include a ship I do like Gaara/Naruto and Gaara/Lee. And, I've seen Shadow request Gaara/Sasuke a couple times and I'd love to try that rarepair out if you're inspired.

  • Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self — I think most interesting to me would be to see Gaara travel back to some point before the Sand-Sound invasion so that he has to deal with being considered a monster again and also with his super shitty seal.
  • Trying To Change The Timeline By Preemptively Killing Someone — There are a lot of very excellent candidates for this in Naruto! Seeing a young-again Gaara do the power fantasy thing and plow through the Akatsuki or kill Orochimaru would be great, for example. Or maybe he doesn't have time to level up quite that far....but realizes he can kill Kabuto at the Konoha exam?
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — I imagine it's Temari and/or Kankurō and I'd love to see the lengths Gaara would be willing to go to in order to not lose them again.
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — Gaara's backstory obviously could do with a bunch of fixing. And the Sand-Sound invasion at the chūnin exams definitely ended up in a lot of people dying who didn't have to! I'd love to see Gaara trying his best to change things while struggling against the fact that everyone is scared of him. Also, like, I wonder how he'll handle the fact that uh....he's not gonna be Kazekage any time soon if Rasa doesn't get murdered by Orochimaru?
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — I have a deep love for the Naruto time travel standard "everyone but me died so I came back in time to make sure things go differently this time" trope. And Gaara does have a fair amount of both agency and power to get shit done!
  • Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s) — I'd love pretty much any outside POV of Gaara suddenly becoming way less homicidal, or in the case of physical time travel anyone seeing Gaara randomly sweep in and fix something. If you want to go a slightly different route, I'd also be interested in Gaara's POV of Kankurō and Temari peggy suing back to their childhood and trying to be better siblings to Gaara.

Hatake Kakashi (Naruto)

Who can resist Kakashi time travel, honestly? I really love Kakashi and what an absolute disaster he is interpersonally while still being an absolutely terrifying opponent. I like his gen interactions with pretty much everyone and ship-wise I like Kakashi/Gai, Kakashi/Tenzou, and Kakashi/Kisame.

If Kakashi is old enough/in the right place for it when he travels back, I would like to mention that I love clan politics and that sort of worldbuilding for Konoha.

  • Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self — Generally I'd prefer Kakashi not be too young, like at least on the cusp of graduating the Academy and becoming a genin, rather than so young he's not even in the Academy yet, but otherwise you honestly can't go wrong. Every single possible version of this trope and Kakashi is so delicious.
  • Trying To Change The Timeline By Preemptively Killing Someone — I'm thinking Danzō, but there are a ton of good options! Also, I'd definitely be interested in Kakashi going back in time intending to kill Itachi to prevent the massacre only to stumble into the truth about it and have to rapidly reassess his plans and aim for Danzō instead.
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — Sakumo or Rin or Obito or Minato would obviously work! They'd work so well. But I'd also love to see, like, Kakashi trying to do better by Sasuke ("saving" him not from death but from, you know...being traumatized and isolated, etc) or avert a non-canonical death.
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — There's so much that needs fixing. As mentioned previously, seeing Kakashi try to prevent the Uchiha massacre would be great. Or maybe try to be a better presence in Naruto's life earlier on? Or maybe try to get the Sandaime to give his life to seal the Kyūbi so that Minato can live?
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — I have a deep love for the Naruto time travel standard "everyone but me died so I came back in time to make sure things go differently this time" trope. And Kakashi would be SO guilty about it, too! Delicious.
  • Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s) — Outside POV of Kakashi time traveling! I'd especially love Gai or Itachi or Minato.

Group: Hatake Kakashi & Yamato | Tenzō

In addition to loving Kakashi I, yes, also love Tenzō. And I really like the complicated relationship inherent in how they met, further complicated by the fact that Tenzō was first a lab experiment and then a weapon for Danzō and then in ANBU approximately 5ever...and I just figure Kakashi was the one leading Tenzō forward for a large amount of that?

  • Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self — Either or both! Particularly interested in seeing Tenzō struggle to figure out wtf he did last time to get Kakashi to go so far out of his way for Tenzō, but nearly just as interested in seeing Kakashi realize that actually he can do way better by Tenzō this time around.
  • Trying To Change The Timeline By Preemptively Killing Someone — I'd be equally thrilled with Danzō or Orochimaru. Or Hiruzen? But then they'd have to have someone on hand to be Hokage.
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — Either of them trying to save the other would be great.
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — They both have sad backstories and canon is full of things it'd be great to see fixed. One or both of them trying to prevent the Uchiha Massacre would be wonderful. Or, maybe they travel back in time to redo Team 7's first C-rank and Kakashi justifies having Tenzō shadow his team's mission because he would actually very much like to not traumatize his kids with Haku and Zabuza's deaths again?
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — I have a deep love for the Naruto time travel standard "everyone but me died so I came back in time to make sure things go differently this time" trope. Either or both of them traveling back in time would be very welcome.
  • Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s) — One of them as a time traveller and the other as the outside POV would be great, but both of them as time travellers and some third party as the outside POV would be just as great.

Group: Hoshigaki Kisame/Senju Tobirama

Morne joked about this for Trick or Treat and now here we are. I guess why I like the idea of this ship is that A) it's blatantly nonsensical, honestly, it's delightfully ridiculous but B) I think if it were taken as seriously as possible and an earnest attempt was made a really really interesting fic could result. Kisame has a lot of Opinions about a village system that Tobirama more or less built, and I think that that could lead to some EXTREMELY interesting interactions. Plus, you know, Kisame's main contact with Konoha is through Itachi which means his has an incredibly different POV of it compared to most characters who typically meet Tobirama via time travel.

I don't mind mentions of past Kisame/Itachi and I have a very very low bar for what would be "shippy enough" for a weird ship like this. In fact, honestly, I would be pleased with gen interactions between them, too, so do that if you want.

  • Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self — ...yeah, okay, this freeform doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the context of this pairing because obviously these two were never alive at the same time. But I guess with a really generous definition of "past self" you could have Kisame like, wildly overshoot his attempt to peggy sue and end up in the body of his pre-village incarnation.
  • Trying To Change The Timeline By Preemptively Killing Someone — I'd love to see Kisame go back to the past to try and kill Madara. Or Danzō, assuming he's learned about the Uchiha Massacre.
  • Peggy Sue - Time Traveling Character Goes Back to Saved Loved One — Kisame trying to save Itachi by inserting himself into Konoha extremely early/killing Danzō/you know, whatever.
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Canon or Backstory — Maybe Kisame thinks the villages never should have been made, or the bijū never captured?
  • Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster — I have a deep love for the Naruto time travel standard "everyone but me died so I came back in time to make sure things go differently this time" trope and the idea of it all being on Kisame to fix it is GREAT because he's like the last person anyone would pick but I believe in him. Maybe, if you want, Tobirama remembers being edo tensei'd or something, so they're in this together?
  • Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s) — I would love Tobirama's POV of Kisame.

  • Living Spouse Time Travels To Relive Their Wedding Day With Their Spouse Who Has Since Passed Away

The time travel tag is really the whole entire prompt here! I love Magnus and I’m constantly very sad about his wife being dead, so I’d love anything that A) will make me more sad about that and/or B) will act as a fix-it. That is to say, I’d be equally into either of these plots:

  • Magnus travels back in time just to relive the wedding. He can’t change anything substantially, but he can have a little time with Julia.
  • Magnus travels back in time to fix things, and happens to travel back to the day of his wedding.

I’m also definitely open to other characters also traveling back as well (eg, Taako, Merle) or Magnus traveling far enough back that he also gets to relive/redo planning the wedding and stuff. Worldbuilding around Faerun/Raven Roost’s marriage traditions in contrast with what Magnus grew up with would also be excellent, especially if there’s any marriage tradition that Magnus didn’t get to do last time that he gets to do this time because he remembers it.

Fandom note: I've only seen a little bit of Korra and I haven't read any of the comics, I've just seen the ATLA cartoon. I don't mind references to/spoilers to post-canon ATLA stuff if it comes up because of time travel, but obviously I want a focus on Zuko and the other ATLA characters.

Requested medium(s):

  • fanfiction

Requested character:

  • Zuko

Shipping note: I'd prefer a gen focus but don't mind mentions of background ships.

Fandom-specific DNWs:

  • fic that primarily focuses on Azula, especially helping Azula — I love Azula and I don't mind her showing up! But I really want to see Zuko mostly focusing on someone or something else. It's okay if that thing is vaguely Azula adjacent (eg, Fire Nation politics or Azula as the antagonist) and definitely okay for Azula to benefit directly/on purpose, I basically just DNW Azula & Zuko fic for this exchange.

  • Time Travel Fix-It - fixing one's own mistakes
  • Character Travels Back to When They Were Still a Massive Jackass

Zuko is my favorite ATLA character, closely followed by like every single other character, and I'm so thrilled with just the vague idea of him time traveling. I decided to request Zuko alone because there were just too many good character combinations possible and I wanted to leave them wide open.

I don't really care what age Zuko is when he travels back, but I'm definitely most interested in having him travel back to the earlier parts of canon or before canon but after he's exiled. But it would also be cool to see him avoid getting exiled! Either way, I'd love to see something that explores the Fire Nation in general or Zuko's ship in particular and brings in a lot of worldbuilding, especially if there's contrast between what past!Zuko saw/thought was happening and what future!Zuko sees/understands. It'd also be cool to see him travel back before or just on the cusp of him switching to the Gaang's side so he has to grapple with that change in outlook while also struggling with traveling through time.

Mental Time Travel to Past - Replacing Past Self

No one has ever loved this trope as much as I love it, I'm absolutely sure. I do, to be clear, also like physical time travel, but something about mental time travel kicks me RIGHT in the id, so you basically can't go wrong. Does Zuko tell anyone? Does he try and fail to keep it to himself? Does he admit it to an unlikely confidant? Does he try to make things go the same for awhile while agonizing over it, or does he immediately derail the plot?

I'm particularly interested in (but don't require!) seeing Zuko go back far enough to change some things but not others, because I really love like....why is wording this so hard....like a character who regrets having done something years/decades ago who suddenly goes back in time to right after that thing they did, so they can't undo it but they have to deal with whatever the fallout of it was while regretting it even more intensely than ever before?

Time Travel Fix-It - Altering Non-Canonical Disaster

Ozai wins? Aang dies? Aang defeats Ozai but only by killing him and Zuko decides that that's not alright? ...these are only the first and most obvious disasters to spring to mind, but I'd be down for whatever you want on this front! What I like about this freeform is the increased pressure it puts on the time traveler to get it right this time, to change things as much as they can instead of shooting to keep things pretty much the same.

Mental time travel would obviously be welcome, but maybe you're thinking physical, instead! In that case I'd especially love to see Zuko interacting with the White Lotus society, with people in Ba Sing Se, with Hakoda, with Jeong Jeong the Deserter. I also think seeing him be absolutely horrified by how small the Gaang is would be great. Especially Aang and Toph!

Time Travel Fix-It - fixing one's own mistakes

Zuko makes soooo many mistakes and probably regrets them more and more as time goes on. It'd be great to see him get to either redo some stuff (in a mental time travel case) or take steps to stop his past self from fucking up quite so badly/so often (in case of physical time travel) with both small personal mistakes and wider-reaching public disasters.

What I think interests me most about this freeform and Zuko is that Zuko is INCREDIBLY hard on himself when it comes to, uh, everything, so I think watching him fix problems he himself created is really great? And in the case of fixing his past self's mistakes in physical time travel, I wonder if seeing the mistakes from the outside as an adult would help him forgive himself a little.

Character Travels Back to When They Were Still a Massive Jackass

For mental time travel, I'd love to see Zuko struggle to deal with being treated like the huge jerk he once was! Especially if he has to be at least kind of sneaky about his time travel so he can't just do a complete 180 immediately upon arrival in the past. In addition to Iroh and the Gaang...maybe the soldiers on his ship or something?

For physical time travel, I'd love to see Zuko be indirectly confronted with what a jackass he used to be. Like trying to help someone who's had something really sucky done to them....and then realizing that whoops his jackass past self did it to them.
